Buying tickets in advance can backfire on you if you drink.
Renting a Car is not the best idea. Buses are soo cheap and a lot safer.
Hertz, Thrifty and Alamo and when you run into the Cops.

There are soo many archaeological sites that you would need more than a week to satisfy your intellect.
Chichen Itza is one of the wonders of the world and is mind boggling and will leave you wondering for years.
So Mexicans are great ambassadors of their country and you will find everything you can possibly do from them. That is their job, to service the tourist and get repeat customers and they are very courteous and charming.
All that said there are times when they can barely keep up and best times to go for 100% service is in the Off Season
I feel compelled to give you a classic link for a good reason Not to rent a Car that is labelled as such. Hertz, Thrifty and Alamo and when you run into the Cops.
Best to organize your excursions from your resort. This way you go in a group in an air conditioned bus or van and a meal is normally provided at a restaurant or at your destination. Last year when we went to Xcaret we had a coupon provided to us for dinner at a very nice buffet on the grounds. The show that is put on in the evening is fantastic and well worth seeing. Haven’t been to Xel-Ha as yet but heard it’s a fun place to go also. We will try that one out this December. Chichen Itza is a fantastic place to visit. It can make for a long day but worth it. As for renting a car, I wouldn’t unless you really know your way around. It also can get very expensive. One little mark on the car can cost you dearly.
Organizing your excursions from your resort is best. There may be a day that you just don’t feel like going out. If you have organized everything on the net, you will lose your money. At your resort, most times you can rebook for a different day. There will be tour desks in the main lobby that have information on all sorts of adventures you can do. There will probably be more than you can fit in on your first, second, or third stay in Cancun, so don’t be upset about having to come back to check out more adventures. This December will be our 5th trip in 4 years and we are looking forward to some more adventures.
