Well your coming here so just go with the flow, yes we bring in quite a few spring breakers and have been named by others this year as on of the trashiest places for spring break, in the top 10 for 2 other ratings lists, so yes we are not like Cancun, Padre Island and some spots in FL., but you will have a good time.

Broadway at the Beach, many clubs in one location to check out, pick up a Surge paper at most grocery stores and some bars, it comes out on Thursday, it is free and it will give you the places to go.

You sound young and inexperienced at driving, but my advice is drive if you must but take precautions, like: drive only during the day, drive on toll-freeways and highways which are in most large cities of the country, do not drive along the gulf coast right now, drive in the interior of the country, the most dangerous part is closer the border, again you can drive during the day and the road is fine from Monterrey to Nuevo Laredo. Of Course, flying internally in Mexico is cheap, at least check it out the prices before making a final decision! I have driving most of the roads you would be driving and never had a problem or concern.

I would say no... Mexico is very dangerous even for Mexicans.. as an American it gets even more. Dangerous because all they see is dollar signs especially around high tourist areas... I also know there was an advisory for Americans against driving acrossed the border because of the dangers and high crime rate in the border cities on Mexico's side.

.That is not safe or wise for anyone without driving experience in Mexico. Roads are not nearly as good as in the U.S. It is at least a 30 hour drive...3 or 4 days one way FAR better to fly or take the bus...tho that is a long time on a bus...and you would be making this trip coming and going. I live in southern Mexico and have driven most of that trip...and would not recommend it to anyone without experience. In a car full of family, you would be ready to kill each other before the end of the trip. i love mexico, but you should not make that drive. it certainly would not save much money...fly.

No one can tell you what will happen on a specific day. If I could foretell the future, I'd go out and buy a lottery ticket. Most dive schools require state or local inspections of equipment and approval. So, you'll have to find out about the school you choose to attend.

I've gone snorkeling at an underwater National Park near Cancun ... the snorkeling was FANTASTIC!! We had plenty of time with the fish and I never felt "this would be better if I had scuba gear". The snorkeling gear fit well and gave me and my daughters plenty of opportunities. Before we took off on wave-runners to get to the park, I bought each of us Kodak underwater cameras (film).

BTW ... while your in Cancun, be CERTAIN to take a day and pay for a tour of the Mayan ruins at Chichenitza. Again, it is not cheap but, it is worth every penny. We went with a small group (only 10 of us) and I paid extra. However, after talking with those at the hotel where we were staying about their tour, paying the extra for the small group was really worth it. Our tour guide was better informed, took us places others didn't get to go, and we ate better. AND, take TONS of photos.

No agency can teach you what you need to know to be safe in diving in three hours. It is probably NOT crash course but an experience program and not an actual certification. Read you literature and you will probably find this stipulation.

Nothing in life is 100% risk-free -- but if you're willing to fly in a commercial jet, then you shouldn't worry too much about going scuba diving.

Like Archer says, a '3 hour crash course' is almost certainly an 'introductory dive' or 'diving experience' program. Such programs fall a long way short of a full entry-level scuba certification course (which usually requires 25-30 hours of tuition) and so will not qualify you to do further diving in the future. That said, it will (or should) teach you what you need to know to do a single shallow dive (<40 ft, and probably no more than 15-20 ft) safely under professional supervision.

You will (or should) first be taught basic diveskills in standing-depth water, such as a swimming pool, or a sheltered beach. These should include underwater hand signals, ear equalisation, mask clearing, regulator recovery and clearing, air-gauge location and usage, and possibly also alternate air source usage. After that, you will go for a shallow dive, during which you will (or should) be accompanied in-water by an instructor or divemaster. Divetime will primarily be limited by how quickly you use up your air (i.e. deep slow breathing = more time underwater!).

Under those conditions, and provided you have no medical complications, how 'safe' this experience will be is basically down to you. Provided you practise the skills until you're comfortable, listen to your briefings, and follow your guide's instructions underwater, then virtually nothing can go wrong.

Also, re. what Academic said: the global scuba tourism industry is mostly self-regulating,and thus generally NOT subject to obligatory local government regulation/ inspection. This is particularly true in developing countries (such as Mexico), and especially in those with semi-functional/ corrupt judicial systems.

If you want reassurance that your instructors and/or the dive centre take their responsibility to their customers seriously, make sure that they are registered with a recognised international scuba training agency (e.g. PADI, NAUI, SSI, SDI/TDI, etc.), and that they carry liability insurance. While an accident is unlikely, I would also advise you to make sure that your travel insurance does cover scuba activities, including evacuation and medical costs (most policies do not, unless you pay an additional 'adventure sports' premium).

Enjoy your vacation.
