We are interested in party’s and yet still awesome beach life, with good bars!

A small group of friends is planning to go to Cancun for 5 days early August. First time for all of us. I found some nice packages including air,hotel, food. I’m just not sure what part to stay at and what’s out there. Like downtown, isla mujeres, caribbean side… etc? We’d like to do something different everyday. Like one day is water activities, one day is shopping/clubbing, one day is sightseeing, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Right off the bat the best advice I can give you is to stay in Cancun’s Hotel Zone. This is the area of Cancun that is shaped like the number seven, and faces both Isla Mujeres to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the east. The Hotel Zone is home to hundreds of famous Cancun restaurants, nightlife, shopping and entertainment options that you just won’t find in the Riviera Maya. I also strongly suggest you pick up a Cancun travel guide with lots of info, the one with the most Cancun restaurants and establishments is People’s Choice Guide Cancun.

The waves on Cancun’s eastern Caribbean shore are much stronger than the ones found on the north side, which faces Isla Mujeres. The choice is yours as to which is better for your group. If you are traveling with young children, most people prefer resorts on the north side.

Since you are traveling in August, you will have the opportunity to do the most unique tour offered, a swim with whale sharks.

There are lots of things to do, one of which is visiting the Mayan ruins. I recommend that unless you do very well in the heat, that you choose to visit Tulum over Chichen Itza. While Chichen Itza is the larger and more spectacular site, voted on the top 7 man made wonders of the world, it might be too much to do in August. If you visit Tulum, it is a much smaller site, seen in a couple of hours, and is set on cliffs above the Caribbean Sea. This seaside location keeps the area much cooler than Chichen Itza, which is located inland. The other aspect to this tour is that you combine it with a visit to one of the areas eco parks. I recommend you choose Xel-Ha and get the All-Inclusive plan. This will be a bit more money but will save you so much if you plan to eat or drink. Xcaret is the other eco park you can choose, but I think it is much too big to combine with something else in the same day. If you wish to visit Xcaret, you should visit it on its own.

Finally, if you decide to visit Isla Mujeres, I recommend you consider doing the swim with dolphins with Dolphin Discovery. This way, they take you to the island, and after your swim, you can ask them to call a taxi for you. From there you head for the north town, rent a golf cart and see the island on your own self guided day tour. The highlights on the island include Garrafon National Park (also managed by DD), Playa Norte (north beach), a few interesting houses, turtle farm and a great restaurant on Playa Lancheros. There are lots of restaurants on the island, but this one prepares the traditional Mayan recipe for a fish dish known as Tikkin-Xic (pronounced Teek-een-cheeck), it’s mouthwatering good!
